Mexico national team has participated in the tournament since the first World Cup in 1930 and has played in 16 matches since then, although it has failed to qualify for the final three times: 1934 (Italy), 1974 (West Germany) and 1982 (Spain). Additionally, it dropped out of the final in 1938 (France) and was banned by FIFA from the 1990 World Cup (Italy) after sending overage players in the 1988 Olympic qualifiers (which was a youth tournament).

Top players of Mexico national football team at World cup

Mexico's record World Cup player, Rafael Márquez, and goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal have appeared in five FIFA World Cups each, a record they only share with German midfielder Lothar Matthäus

    Rafael Márquez

Rafael Márquez is a living legend. Considered by many to be the greatest Mexican footballer (or at least the greatest defender). Although he is no longer active, his legacy still lives on in the hearts of every Barcelona fan. With his support, he played from 2003 to 2010. In those years he played a total of 163 games and scored 9 goals. Although this may seem small, remember that El Kaiser is a defensive player! El Kaiser', the nickname for Maruqez! A very strange nickname, half German, half Spanish. Kaiser means "emperor" in German. Raphael has captured the hearts of many with his indomitable style of play and strong will! By the end of his career, Rafael Marukez had played in 519 professional football games. Most of them play for French clubs in Barcelona and Monaco.

    • Portugal at the World Cup

    1650520589369494_副本.jpg

For many years, Portugal wasn’t considered a major force in the football world. The 1966 World Cup was Portugal’s first major international tournament. Led by Ballon d'Or winner Eusebio, the Selecao finished third in the 1966 World Cup, which is to date their best-ever finish at the tournament. After 1966, the team was able to qualify for the mega event only once until 2002. Similarly, in the UEFA European Championship, the team qualified only twice for the continental event until 2000.

After 2000, the Portuguese team has been qualifying regularly for all the major international tournaments. This has been responsible mainly for the quality and the quantity of talent being produced by the country. In early 2000s, Portugal’s rise was led by Luis Figo, Rui Costa, and Ricardo Carvalho. They were later joined by Cristiano Ronaldo, who is considered amongst the greatest players of all time. Ronaldo along with Fabio Coentrao, Joao Moutinho, Nani, Pepe, and new players such as Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Ruben Dias, Renato Sanches, and Joao Felix has helped in the continuous rise and establishment of the national team as a major force in the world football today. The national team, led by Ronaldo, won its first major international title in 2016 in France after defeating the host nation in the final of Euro 2016. The team also won the inaugural season of the UEFA Nations League in 2018-19 which was held in Portugal. These titles were won under head coach Fernando Santos who was appointed in 2014 and still is in charge of the national team. Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the team record for most caps and goals, is the team captain.
